Hal is the Abbey Recorder who secretly cares for Arula and Samkim. The evening Martin's sword suddenly appears beside the former, he spends all night researching the mystery and eventually locates a piece of scroll. While running down the stairs of Great Hall he is accidentally killed by an arrow to the throat from Dingeye and Thura, who are playing with a bow. The two vermin flee with Martin's sword, and Samkim discovers the mouse's body the following morning.
