The Grumpy Watervole - true name unknown - is a resident of Mossflower who lives alongside one of the River Moss's tributaries. He is cruel, has a bad temper, and forces Orkwil to do some chores while aiming an arrow at him and refusing to give him any sustenance. He is later attacked by a pair of rats but saved by Orkwil, who ties the vermin to a tree; the vole later says that he threw the still-tied rats into a swamp and weighted them down with stones so they would drown. At one point he is captured by Vizka's crew, dressed up to resemble a Sea Raider, and used to trick the Redwallers. He is knocked unconscious by Benjo and interrogated by Rorc before being threatened by Orkwil and shoved aside by Gorath. While in the Abbey he becomes obsessed with the corsairs finding him and is banished, killing Atrata and stealing Martin's sword (he does the latter because Orkwil had previously snagged his dagger). He is crushed to death by a boulder from Magger. Due to his wickedness, the Grumpy Watervole is considered to be a "grey character".
