Grubbage is a large crew member aboard Seascab who acts as the bosun and steersrat, as he is considered to be an expert navigator. He is almost completely deaf due to having no ears, often misunderstanding what his fellow corsairs say and getting the messages mixed up, but possesses a kind heart and obeys orders to the best of his ability. Along with Scummy he is forced to walk behind Plugg after the fox's tail is torn off, applying pine resin to the severed limb and attempting to keep it on Plugg's backside. He is later captured by the Redwallers near Brockhall but treated kindly as they realize he is a goodbeast, and he joins Triss on the trip to Riftgard to free the remaining slaves. After this he presumably travels back to Redwall where he stays for the remainder of his seasons. Grubbage is considered to be a "grey character".
