Groffgut's Gang

This group of young water rats is led by Groffgut and originally live south of Redwall until they head north following constant jokes from other vermin bands about being the smallest. While camping they happen across a wounded Pandion and decide to eat him, cruelly torturing him with their spears first. They are stopped by the timely arrival of Tiria and friends, and Groffgut is savagely beaten by Brinty who almost kills him before Tiria intervenes. Due to this he swears revenge against the young mouse and leads his gang to Redwall where they stride up to the main gates, but they are spotted by Tiria and Hangpaw is killed by her well-aimed slingstone. The vermin flee and hide in a bog from a pursuing Banjon and Brink, but while this move is successful they end up covered in foul-smelling sludge. After this an angry Groffgut swears vengeance upon Redwall and tries to gain access inside one night by having his band stand on each other's shoulders and throw a grapnel over the walltop. Lycian stops them by breaking her teapot on Threetooth's head, causing the vermin to crash to the earth below. Groffgut loses his tail in the melee, and he decides to wait in the ditch for an opportunity. Some time later a handful of Redwallers push a massive gannet outside the main gates, and Groffgut cruelly kills Brinty (who has his back to the ditch) with a single slash of his blade. As he turns to run he is stopped by the Lance of Corriam which is thrown by Banjon, and as he falls over dead his weight breaks the weapon. The otter Skipper then throws his body into the ditch to be eaten by the gannet. Frogeye and Plugtail are devoured by the bird, and the rats who survive flee into Mossflower never to be seen again.
