Grath is a member of Holt Lutra who lives with her tribe on Mossflower's northwestern shore. She is the daughter of Lutra, wife of Inbar, daughter-in-law of Wallyum and Dorumee, and sister-in-law of Winniegold. The entire holt is slaughtered by Conva's crew who are searching for the Tears of all Oceans, six perfectly symmetrical pearls that belong to her father, and she is the only survivor. Glinc and Sitch find her near death three nights later and spend two seasons nursing her back to health, during which the former brings her a yew branch she fashions into a strong bow, and she uses green-fletched arrows. Upon fully recovering she seals the holt entrance with bankmud that dries in the sun, forever entombing her family inside, and swears vengeance against all corsairs. After killing Sprayraider's crew she sails aboard the longboat and eventually meets Martin II's group near the Western Coast, agreeing to join them on the trip to Sampetra. Along the way they stop at Ruddaring Isle where they meet Inbar and he accompanies them the rest of the journey, with the two otters wrecking havoc on the tropical island. While on the return trip she decides to permanently move to Holt Rudderwake where she and Inbar wed.
