Gorath is a young and powerful resident of the far southern lands where he lives with his parents and grandparents. He is the husband of Salixa and father of Rowanbloom. After his mother and father are killed in the Great Vermin Wars, he and his grandparents flee the area but become stranded on the Northern Isles after a storm destroys their boat. The trio spend many seasons attempting to farm the harsh land, with him using his pitchfork he calls "Tung". They are viciously attacked by Vizka's crew one night, the elders are murdered after they are purposely locked inside their home that is then set ablaze, and Gorath knocked unconscious by the fox's mace. He awakens to find himself chained to Bludgullet's mast and a horrific wound on his head, which eventually turns into a scab. Vizka reveals his plans on harnessing the Bloodwrath to turn the badger into an indestructible weapon to be used in battle. Gorath vows to kill them all and refuses to surrender, resulting in Vizka starving him. He later meets Orkwil who is captured by the corsairs and tied alongside him, and the young thief picks their locks just as Codj appears to check on them. Gorath instantly lunges at the fox, easily strangling him to death as revenge for the brutal murders of his grandparents, and the two friends escape. They decide to head to Redwall as the young badger reveals that he has been visited by an armoured mouse who says he must watch for a thief, and upon arriving at the Abbey he is taken to the Infirmary where Atrata heals him as best she can. The scab on his forehead falls off and leaves a flame-shaped scar, hence his surname. Maudie, who has been sent by Asheye to find his successor, recognizes the scar as the same one from her leader's visions and realizes that he is destined to rule the mountain fortress. Some time later Gorath sets out to find Vizka but ends up meeting Salixa and the Tabura, who teach him how to control the Bloodwrath and convince him to return to Redwall. He heads back into the woodlands to find Maudie's group as they are attempting to locate him, and they all end up on the Plateau where he and Salixa reveal their feelings for each other. Along with the GUOSIM they all participate in the Battle of the Plateau against Vizka's crew and the Brownrats tribe, and they send the vermin running off. He chases after Vizka, finds him aboard Bludgullet, and following a brief duel he finally gets his vengeance when he fatally breaks the fox's spine and throws him into the River Moss. He renames the ship Eulalia and uses her to sail to Salamandastron where he becomes Lord. Many seasons later he and his family, along with Asheye, travel to Redwall to visit the Tabura.
