Glisam - derived from glis, Latin for certain dormouse species - is the old Abbot of Redwall who has ruled for many seasons. He appears to be more warlike than other Abbey leaders, possibly has sailed in the past, and has experience in wielding a bow as shown when he fires an arrow and it lands millimetres from fleeing vermin. He assists in the search for the Great Doomwyte Idol jewels by solving some of Gonff's riddles and finds one of the jewels in a clay tray from the Kitchen. After all four have been recovered and the Doomwytes defeated, he orders for the jewels to be buried above the hillside at the collapsed cavern in memory of those who perished in the final battle. He eventually finds himself using a wheelchair and is pushed around by Torilis. Upon his retirement he is succeeded by Perrit and becomes a teacher to an illiterate Umfry.
