This riddle from Germaine is solved by Cornflower, Mrs. Churchmouse, and Rollo, although other Redwallers help to find clues. After Slagar steals the young ones and covers his tracks so Matthias's group cannot follow them, Mordalfus is given a message by Martin that leads him to a chamber where the statue of Germaine is located, as well as a stone tablet with inscriptions written in Loamscript. As John is the only living creature at the Abbey able to decipher this difficult language, he solves the riddle which reveals where Slagar is taking the captives. Warbeak's tribe flies the solved puzzle to Matthias's band, thus allowing them to figure out where their children are being led to.
