Germaine - derived from the Latin word for "sprout" - is the old Abbess of Loamhedge and its last ruler before a terrible vermin plague kills most of the residents, forcing her and the survivors to flee. They eventually arrive in Mossflower where they become CORIM members and she is reunited with her good friend Bella. A kind mouse who possesses leadership skills and a lot of wisdom, she does not hesitate to bring calm to others during tense moments and helps to construct the sluice gates used to control Kotir's flooding. As she is an excellent healer she helps to save a severely wounded Martin following his vicious duel against Tsarmina, and after dreaming of a new home for woodlanders she is responsible for drawing Redwall's blueprints. She is its founder (along with Martin), the first Abbess, and the first Recorder, and buried underneath the Abbey in a tomb with a statue of herself with a book in her lap. She also writes a journal that is read by Marjoram innumerable seasons later so she can learn about past Redwall rulers.
