Gawjo is an old wanderer who has silver fur and lives with his family. He is the husband of Ellayo, father of Janglur (they both share the lazy eyes) , father-in-law of Rimrose, grandfather of Song, and adoptive father of fifteen hedgehogs including Torrab. He wields a bow and twin daggers, and heads off to find Marlfox Island when his son is quite young. While he mangoes to find the place he is captured and made a slave, later escaping and reaching the opposite side of the Great Inland Lake; here he meets Torrab and fourteen other hedgehogs who have all been orphaned thanks to the Marlfoxes. He attempts several times to return to Castle Marl so he can free the other slaves but never succeeds as archers, Athrak's flock, and the Teeth of the Deeps always keep him back. After meeting his granddaughter Song he helps to heal Megraw's dislocated wing and participates in the final battle, later traveling to Redwall where he reunites with his family and stays here for the remainder of his seasons.
