Gabool the Wild, King

Gender: male

Species: sea rat

Appears In: Mariel of Redwall

Gabool is the large King of Terramort (he names himself ruler) who lives in Bladegirt. He wears a red cloak, gold earrings, twists red and blue ribbons into his long beard, has emerald-studded gold teeth, and wields several weapons including a double-edged cutlass. His titles are King of Searats, Captain of Captains, Warlord of all Waters, Lord of Terramort Isle, and Warlord of all Rodent Corsairs. In his youth he captains Ratwake with Greypatch as his second-in-command, however after he conquers Terramort he starts to viciously kill any he deems as an enemy even if they are allies and this causes Greypatch to desert. At one point in time he sails to the far south and captures Skrabblag, bringing him back to the fortress where he throws him into a huge underground pit. One of his crews captures Joseph and Mariel, leading to the stealing of the Joseph Bell which he keeps in his fortress and constantly orders an enslaved Joseph to decipher the Bell's mysterious inscriptions and pictures. As the mouse cannot read all of them, Gabool eventually grows obsessed with figuring out the meaning behind the symbols; he also becomes mentally insane as he suffers debilitating nightmares in which Rawnblade attempts to kill him, and every night the Bell rings on its own which wakes him up and causes insomnia. He reaches the point where he mistakes other corsairs for Greypatch and sends them to their death, usually by tricking them into entering Skrabblag's pit. In the Battle of Terramort he hides inside his castle and purposely runs through the place to get Rawnblade to pursue him, and the badger falls into the aforementioned pit where he is immediately attacked by Skrabblag. Galvanized by the spirit of Martin, Rawnblade throws the beast out of the pit and right onto Gabool. Skrabblag, enraged over being cruelly held in captivity for a long time, stabs the corsair King numerous times at the base of his skull with his venomous tail. Gabool then falls to the ground twitching, shudders once, and dies with his back arched like a bow. Skrabblag is slain by Dandin, Bladegirt is left in ruins, and the corsairs are exterminated.
