Egbert is an intelligent resident of Southsward who lives in the tunnels near Floret, often reading or writing in a secret room within the castle so he is not spotted by Nagru's soldiers. His original name is Soilburr but decides to change as he wishes to move away from the traditional mole lifestyle, and while he doesn't speak like other moles he can very easily revert into their peculiar speech patterns whenever he wishes. He attempts to save as many of Gael's scrolls as possible as the rats use them for fires, and in the final battle he puts his healing skills to work by tending to a wounded Muta and Rab. He lets Mariel's group use his tunnels to reach various parts of Floret but doesn't participate in fighting as he is a peaceful creature, instead keeping Benjy and his two sisters safe during the battle. After Nagru's death he is given the titles Castle Librarian and Archivist of Floret, Official Recorder for Southsward Country, and Dynastic Concordance Coordinator to the House of Gael as well as a very large medal which he hangs in his office.
