Durral is the old Abbot of Redwall who serves for seven seasons and acts as a Kitchen assistant before becoming leader. He and Viola are kidnapped by Lask's group and taken aboard Waveworm to be used as hostages in exchange for the Tears of all Oceans, as the lizard General believes they are hidden within the Abbey. During the trip he notices that Romsca is defending them against the reptiles, even killing one when he gets too close to Viola. He is the only survivor (by this time Viola has escaped) of a vicious massacre between the corsairs and lizards, holding Romsca in his arms and thanking her for her kindness. Before she passes away from her injuries she tells him how to sail to Sampetra, as it is too late to turn around, and search for her friends there as they will help him. Upon reaching the tropical island he is imprisoned by Ublaz but rescued by Martin II's group, then taken across the sea back to Redwall by Hawm's seals. He decides to retire, hands the title of leadership to Tansy, and returns to helping in the Kitchen. In the epilogue it is revealed that he often dreams of Romsca and Sampetra.
