Dunespike is the old leader of the Dunehogs tribe who lives with them on sand hills south of the North Shores. He is the father of Murfo and suffers from a painful toothache which keeps him from enjoying sweet food until Martin removes the rotten tooth with his sword, resulting in the Chieftain being extremely grateful. Despite his age he is a champion spiketussler and defeats Doggle in a duel using only one stilt, and helps Martin's group in their quest to the North Shores by giving them a large amount of food and supplies. While watching Folgrim he remembers a fearsome mouse warrior (Luke) and his squirrel friend (Ranguvar).
