Doogy is a short, fat, and fiery-tempered resident of the Highlands who wields several weapons. He is the adoptive uncle of Melanda, has a thick northern accent, and travels south with his best friend Tam where they happen upon Araltum's Groves. After helping to defend the region from vermin they grow bored and are eventually thrown in prison after insulting the royal couple, however they are released not long after the Royal Banner is stolen during an ambush by Gulo's horde that also sees a lot of squirrels slain. The squirrels strike a deal with a less-than-thrilled Araltum: if they can successfully retrieve the banner they will be given their freedom. They are captured by the Long Patrol who initially believe they are responsible for the murders of some hares, and he becomes friends with Ferdimond after they get into a boxing duel following some insults. Along with him and Tam, he is later given a scouting mission by Buckworthy but not overly swift due to his size; instead he is asked by the Brigadier to travel to Redwall to warn them about Gulo's presence in Mossflower. They end up finding Yoofus with the banner, and the vole tells them about Armel and Brooky getting captured by the vermin army. He and Tam succeed in rescuing the maids and reaching Redwall just in time, killing several soldiers along the way, and not long after they head back out to pull Gulo away from the Abbey. Working with the GUOSIM they conceive a plan but he and Yoofus are separated from the rest of the group, so they decide to sneak to the enemy camp and raid it; unfortunately they are caught by a small vermin gang who then take them to the Muskar home. He and Yoofus defeat the band and stay the night with the dormice family, however the following morning he discovers the vole missing and tracks him to his home where he find the fabled Walking Stone (actually a tortoise named Rockbottom that belongs to Yoofus and his wife Didjety). The trio plan on taking the little reptile to Redwall but get lost thanks to Yoofus, eventually spotting it after about two days and bolting as they are being pursued by Gulo. Doogy is captured by the wolverine and tied to a stake, though this doesn't deter him from hurling insults and watches the final battle between Gulo and Tam. After the former's death he is freed, later teaches Melanda how to wield a sword, and joins the MacBurl family in returning the Royal Banner. He then returns to Redwall where he stays for the remainder of his seasons.
