Diptail is a member of Ironbeak's flock who, along with his brothers Brightback and Quickbill, acts as a forager as well as a scout. They all originate from the Northlands and because of their importance they are targeted by the Redwallers, with the woodlanders capturing all three siblings to use as hostages for the safe return of three kidnapped inhabitants (Cornflower, Mrs. Churchmouse, and Rollo respectively). In the final battle one of the brothers is killed (not known which one) and the surviving birds are outfitted with a special collar that prohibits them from flying too high before being sent off by Stryk.
