Darkclaw is a well-built Captain in Cluny's horde who wields a spear and sword. He is intelligent, third-in-command, and does not receive a promotion when Redtooth is killed by Constance (this goes to Cheesthief as a plan by Cluny to rid himself of the power-hungry rat, which ends up being successful when Beaver and Constance accidentally kill him thinking he is the Scourge). Along with Fangburn and Killconey he temporarily takes over the horde after Cluny steps away when he starts to lose confidence in himself, so he leads the soldiers into a tunnel previously dug by Killconey. They are unaware that Chickenhound has already told the Redwallers about the plan, thus Foremole's crew finds the underground route and lays out traps for the unsuspected vermin. When Darkclaw pops his head out from the ground he is immediately doused and killed by boiling water that is being poured into the tunnel. Not long after his death, Darkclaw's spirit appears in one of Cluny's nightmares.
