Damug Warfang, Firstblade

Gender: male

Species: greatrat

Appears In: The Long Patrol

Damug is initially a soldier in the Rapscallions army and, along with his brother Byral, a possible candidate to succeed their father Gormad as leader. After he dies from injuries inflicted by Cregga, the two brothers duel to see who will be the new Firstblade but Damug has Lugworm rig the fight so that he will win; the plan works and Byral is slain. Not long after he orders the aforementioned stoat to place an object on the flat side of the Rapscallion Sword so that it will land on that side, thus the army travels over land instead of sea. He is terrified of Cregga and refuses to go near Salamandastron, almost killing Lugworm when he foolishly mentions the Badger Lady. This causes the stoat to ally himself with Borumm and Vendace, two vermin who preferred Byral, but the trio are caught and punished by living the remainder of their seasons in chains. They manage to file through their bonds and escape with others who are also being punished, however they are all found by Skaup and brought back to Damug; the evil Firstblade then has the group executed by tying rocks around their necks and tossing them into a nearby river. Thanks to Rinkul's discovering of Redwall's sinking south wall, Damug plans on conquering the place but is convinced by a disguised Midge (who is dressed up as a vermin Seer) to instead fight the woodlanders at the Ridge of a Thousand. The plan works as he is slightly superstitious, and he leads his army to the ridge. While his numbers are far stronger than the Redwallers and Long Patrol put together, he suddenly orders his soldiers to stop fighting and prepares to execute a captured Perigord. Before he can do this he is attacked by Cregga who has suddenly appeared with the rest of her hares, and although he manages to permanently blind her with slashes of his sword he is slain by her while they both fall off the ridge. Any surviving vermin are presumably slain and the once-mighty Rapscallions army is exterminated.
