Mrs. Churchmouse is initially a resident of Saint Ninian's where she lives with her family until they are forced to move to Redwall when Cluny arrives in the area. She is the wife of John, mother of Tess and Tim, mother-in-law of Mattimeo, and grandmother of Martin II. While she is present during the Late Rose Summer Wars she does not appear very much, but when Ironbeak's flock invades the Abbey she plays a big role (in addition she suffers a terrible loss when her twins are kidnapped by Slagar's gang). Along with her good friend Cornflower she rings the bells in hopes of scaring the birds away, however while attempting to flee back inside they are snatched up. Rollo is later captured and the trio used by Ironbeak to convince the Redwallers to surrender if they want to see their friends live, but they are safely returned. She aids Cornflower in the idea of dressing up as Martin's spirit, and is eventually reunited with her children.
