Cornflower - an annual flower in the Asteraceae family - is a young resident of Redwall who wears headbands and possesses good cooking skills. She is the wife of Matthias, mother of Mattimeo, mother-in-law of Tess, and grandmother of Martin II. During the Late Rose Summer Wars she plays a big role and stops Cluny's attempt at getting inside the Abbey by hurling a lantern at his siege tower, which results in it instantly erupting into flames. Seasons later she suffers a terrible loss when Mattimeo is kidnapped by Slagar, and while Matthias is away searching for him she helps to care for Rollo and save her home from Ironbeak's flock. She conceives the idea of dressing up as Martin's ghost in hopes of scaring the intruders away, and she works with Constance (who provides a spooky voice) several times. While she succeeds in making the birds terrified, Mordalfus asks her to stop as he worries Ironbeak will find out and kill her. After Ironbeak's flock is defeated she waits half a season for her husband and son to return, eventually reuniting with them and helping to prepare a celebratory feast. She later passes away from old age.
