Chugger is an orphaned infant and kidnapped by the Flitchaye until Martin's group rescue him. Upon meeting Garraway he tells her that he used to live in the woodlands with his grandmother, then one day she went to sleep and never woke up. He is briefly captured by some crows but rescued by Krar, and shows no fear towards a terrifying-looking Folgrim. Thanks to his innocence, he changes the tough otter and heals his scarred mind. When the group returns to Redwall from their trip to the North Shores, he adopts the four survivors (Beau, Denno, Dulam, and Vurg respectively) as his "grandpas". He is later adopted by Gonff's family.
