Chigid is the leader of the Painted Ones tribe who lives with them in a five-topped oak within Mossflower. He is the husband of Tala, father of Jeg, keeps Aluco as a personal slave, and purposely pulls out his pinion feathers so he can never fly again. While running into a group of Redwallers in a cavern underneath the Cellar his tribe captures Bisky, though he suffers burns and wounds when a lantern is hurled at him; his rats later capture Dubble which causes Tugga to grow very angry. His wife attempts to heal him but before she can do this they are attacked by the woodlanders, and he has his fellow vermin fire poison darts. He tries to flee when the Gonfelin Thieves arrive on the scene, however he falls out of the tree and injures himself even more. The rats surrender and he is viciously attacked by Tugga, who completely ignores his pleas for mercy and fatally strikes him on the head with his club. The whole thing is witnessed by Tala, and she later fulfills her promise of vengeance when she kills Tugga outside Redwall.
