Cheesethief is a low-ranking Captain in Cluny's horde who wields a dagger and spear. He often dreams of receiving a promotion and can get extremely jealous of any creature he considers to be a rival. While the army is attempting to move a plank from an elm tree to the Abbey wall he sees that Scragg is on Cluny's good side and plans to kill him, however the initial try fails and Scragg is injured when he falls out of the tree; Cheesethief later returns and secretly suffocates him to death. He helps with the battering ram that the vermin use to attempt to break down Redwall's main gates, resulting in Cluny somewhat favouring him. When the Scourge later steps aside he leaves Cheesethief in charge and he stays in his leader's tent. He struts around wearing the battle armour and poison tail barb, completely unaware that he is being watched by Beaver and Constance (they think it is Cluny in the tent) who have constructed a gigantic crossbow in hopes of assassinating Cluny. The unlucky rat is slain by the massive candle snuffer used as an arrow, and the Scourge claims that Cheesethief had been planning a mutiny against him before thanking Constance from afar for "doing him a favour".
