Butty is a fat resident of Salamandastron and Corporal in the Long Patrol who wields a pike. He is good friends with Doogy and Tam, and responsible for all the food and various supplies in the hare army. The woodlanders are attacked by Gulo's horde while the GUOSIM are attempting to move a large willow that has fallen across a river, and he is fatally wounded by the vermin as a result. He then heroically throws himself at the enemy so that Tam survives, and his death is heavily grieved.
