Butty is a young resident of Redwall during the time of Tammo who assists in the Kitchen. He helps to explore Kotir's ancient tower upon its discovery underneath the Abbey's south wall, and though he finds some treasure (this is later melted down into medals and given to the survivors of the Battle of a Ridge of a Thousand) he falls into a swamp and is coated in a phosphorescent mud. In adulthood he becomes Friar and good friends with Nutwing, grieving heavily when the owl is killed by attacking Marlfoxes. Early one morning he awakens after missing dinner and struggling to sleep as he cannot rest on an empty stomach, a characteristic that ends up saving his home as he alerts his friends when he spots Raventail's band sneaking into the Abbey. He later succeeds Craklyn as Abbey Recorder.
