Buckler - a type of shield - is a young resident of Salamandastron and Blademaster in the Long Patrol who wields a hybrid rapier forged by Brang. He is the grandson of Feryn, son of Adarin, younger brother of Clerun, brother-in-law of Clarinna, and uncle of Calla and Urfa. He does not wear the traditional Long Patrol uniform nor speaks like other hares, and is often restless due to the mountain's strict laws. After getting into some trouble he and his best friend Diggs are sent out to visit Clerun on his farm as well as deliver two new bellropes to Redwall along the way. During their trip the two pals meet Flib and the Witherspyk Performing Players, however after Flib and two young hedgehogs vanish one night they meet up with the GUOSIM and eventually arrive at the Abbey. He learns of the situation with the Ravagers and leads a search party into Mossflower, later returning with a captured Gripchun and a severely wounded Clarinna. The latter tells him that Clerun has been murdered by Zwilt, who also took her two infant children. Buckler becomes enraged and swears to hunt Zwilt down, but before he can do this he is confronted by the sable and Ravagers army who demand the Redwallers surrender unless they wish to see the kidnapped babes killed. Buckler immediately recognized the broadsword Zwilt is wielding belongs to his family, so he bursts out of the main gates and challenges him to single combat. He is forced to retreat by vermin archers but later goes back into Mossflower with a group, wanting to stop the horde before they can fulfill their promise of returning to Redwall. With assistance from Axtel, he locates Althier only to discover it abandoned and he learns the vermin have already made their way to the Abbey. Buckler heads back to Redwall where he gets the defences ready and encounters Zwilt again when the sable forces his way inside the main building. The two duel, and upon realizing he is losing Zwilt snatches up Dubdub and threatens to kill him. Buckler, not wanting to see an innocent beast die, drops his rapier and offers his life in exchange for the hogbabe's safety. Zwilt apparently accepts and forces the young hare to bow down, preparing to decapitate him with the broadsword. Before the sable Commander can do this, he is slain by Clarinna with Martin's sword. After the Ravagers are defeated, he returns to Salamandastron with Diggs where he is given the Blademaster's Medal. He is offered the position of General but respectfully refuses, instead training Ambry to properly wield the broadsword.
