Bryony, Abbess

Gender: female

Species: mouse

Appears In: Outcast of Redwall

Mentioned In: The Long Patrol and High Rhulain

Bryony - a herb famous for its white flower - is a young resident of Redwall and good friends with Meriam. She is the distant ancestor of Andio, Bisky, the Gonfelin Thieves, and Samolus, relative of Dandin, great-granddaughter of Gonff and Columbine, granddaughter of Gonff II, and adoptive mother of Veil. Upon meeting an infant Veil she immediately falls in love with him and does her best to raise him to become a good creature, however she finds herself constantly defending his actions as he is nasty and has a habit of thievery. After he is permanently banished from the Abbey she and her friend Togget follow him, as she hopes to bring him back home. They run into him a handful of times, and she meets and befriends Sunflash along the way, and eventually track Veil all the way to Bat Mountpit. While here she rescues a captured Sunflash but is spotted by Swartt who throws a javelin at her, however Veil steps in front of her and takes the weapon in his midsection. He dies in her arms moments later, and upon returning to Redwall she reveals that she is unsure whether Veil actually sacrificed himself or if he would have let her perish had he known Swartt was going to throw the javelin. She eventually succeeds Meriam as Abbess and becomes interested in raptors, writing a large volume on them. This book is used by Redwallers innumerable seasons later to identify Pandion's species.
