Brome the Healer
Gender: male
Species: mouse
Appears In: Martin the Warrior
Brome - a small village in England as well as a type of grass - is a young resident of Noonvale who lives here with his family. He is the son of Urran Voh and Aryah, younger brother of Rose, and grandfather of Aubretia. He is intelligent, mischievous, resourceful, and runs away from home after having an argument with his father. After wandering near Marshank he is captured by Badrang's horde and forced into slavery, meeting Felldoh and Martin here. He immediately admires them both, and the trio escape from the Prison Pit with help from Grumm and Rose. The group ends up getting separated during a storm, and together with Felldoh he meets and befriends the Rambling Rosehip Players. They decide to attempt a rescue by putting on a "performance" at Marshank, which is really meant to be a distraction so Felldoh can free the slaves. The plan is mostly successful, though some prisoners remain behind, so Brome conceives his own plan of dressing up as a corsair called "Bucktail" and infiltrating the fortress. He ends up meeting Wulpp who is tricked by his disguise, and he uses the rat to gain access into Marshank. While here he works with Keyla to free the remaining slaves and later reunites with Felldoh, though he is horrified when the squirrel cooly kills some of Badrang's soldiers who have been following them. Brome realizes that he will never understand violence even though it is sometimes necessary to defeat tyranny, so instead he becomes a healer. He does, however, defend his companions when they are about to be killed by the vermin. In the final battle he encounters Wulpp and spares him, though he warns the rat that if they ever meet again he will not be so merciful. He suffers a terrible loss when Rose is killed by Badrang, blaming himself for her death and claiming that she would still be alive had he not wandered from home. His friends console him, saying the only beast responsible is Badrang, and he later returns to Noonvale.
