Bescarum - who prefers to be called Scarum - is a young resident of Salamandastron and considered to be one of the most gluttonous hares in the series. He is the son of Whippscut and Dunfreda, nephew of Burdilo, and almost always hungry even after he has eaten. He is best friends with Sagax and Kroova, and runs away with the former after they grow tired of the mountain's strict rules. They meet up with Kroova aboard Stopdog and decide to travel to Redwall, meeting various friends and foes along the way. Upon reaching the mouth of the River Moss and setting up camp they are ambushed by a group of Freebooters led by Slitfang who bring the trio to Plugg. Thanks to Scarum the friends escape and flee onto a small ship, meeting up with Shogg and Triss to run from a pursuing Kurda and Plugg. The group encounters the GUOSIM and they all reach Redwall, but the vermin catch up just as the woodlanders are running to the main gates and Scarum once again saves the day to ensure their survival. The following morning when the enemies attack, Triss plans on pouring oatmeal onto them and so has Scarum command this on the opposite wall. The young hare proves his worth once more by defending the wall and using a net to keep the vermin at bay, and is left at the Abbey to watch the guard while Triss and others head into Mossflower to find Kurda. His appetite gets the better of him and as punishment he is sentenced to cleaning duties as well as a very strict diet. Irritated, he wanders into the woodlands in hopes of finding his friends but ends up running into Kurda who has just been defeated by them. The ferret Princess, enraged over her loss, decides to kill him and despite his predicament he hurls insults at her. He is saved by the timely arrival of his friends and later joins Triss on the trip to Riftgard to free the remaining slaves, writing the ship's log along the way as the others will not let him be head cook. He decides to permanently move to Redwall and visits his parents at Salamandastron every season.
