Bernard - an Abbot and doctor in the Christian faith - is the old Abbot of Redwall who possesses wisdom and patience. He is good friends with Mellus and Simeon, helps to raise Dandin along with other youngsters, and beloved by all. When Greypatch's crew launches constant attacks he does his best to keep his fellow inhabitants calm and allows Clary's trio to assume full command of the defences as he knows they are extremely knowledgeable in the art of war. After Gabool's death he welcomes the TRAG members and eventually retires, with Saxtus succeeding him.
