Battle in the Abyss

This final battle occurs on the fallen Lord of Mossflower in the Abyss between Kharanjul's horde and the five Redwallers (Bragoon, Fenna, Horty, Saro, and Springald respectively). While the friends are attempting to cross the bridge they are stopped by the vermin, with a tall unnamed weasel Captain of the Guard leading from the front and Kharanjul from the back. The weasel questions Bragoon and is immediately slain by the old otter, igniting the battle. The five friends then charge their way through the twenty soldiers in the front, and Bragoon and Saro decide to hold them off while the other three escape. Horty does not go quietly, however, and argues with Bragoon who demands he take the sword and the maids safely back to Redwall. The young hare reluctantly obeys, and the two old warriors are fatally wounded by the vermin army. They use the last ounce of their strength to push the ancient tree trunk into the Abyss, sending Kharanjul and his soldiers to their deaths. The two friends rest on the ledge, holding paws as they pass away peacefully.
