Bateye is an old soldier in Ferahgo's horde who complains about the lack of quality in their food. Ferahgo overhears this remark and forces him to eat a piece of hard bread crust from his skinning knife, resulting in the ferret's gums bleeding as he has no teeth. Although his death is not specifically mentioned he is presumably killed in the Battle of Salamandastron.
