Barranca - Spanish for "obstacle" - is a resident of Sampetra and Captain of Freebooter who expertly wields a sabre. He is the brother of Conva, wears red silks with a headband and black belt studded with garnets, and is extremely popular on the tropical island. He is experienced and tough enough to lead soldiers from the front, and wages a rebellion against Ublaz after Conva is killed by the pine marten Emperor. During the Battle at Sampetra's East Cove he is saved by Rasconza and opens his arms to give a hug as thanks, however the sly Rasconza swiftly grabs and kills him just as some Trident-rats are running by to make it appear as if they kill the stoat.
