Baliss is a huge resident of Mossflower who, like his ancestor Asmodeus, lives in the Quarry. Despite being completely blind he is feared throughout the woodlands, and his sense of smell and hearing are extremely sharp. He strikes a deal with Skurr (who is secretly terrified of him): if he can successfully scare the Redwallers he will be given all the Doomwyte reptiles and amphibians to eat. While slithering towards the Abbey he catches wind of two scents and attacks, however it goes horribly wrong; Corksnout is busy disposing of a dead Tarul and the adder gets the two smells mixed up so instead of biting his prey he accidentally headbutts Corksnout's rear. This results in numerous spines digging themselves into his head and eventually causes him to go insane with the constant pain since he cannot remove them himself. He decides to blame Skurr for the issue and seeks revenge, first capturing Vugri and forcing the raven to lead him to the Doomwyte lair. During the trip there he eats Jeg and, upon arriving at the cavern, purposely blocks the only entrance so the vermin army will suffocate. After a while he is forced to leave as he knows he must find water to help with the agonizing pain in his head, eventually finding the underground lake within the cavern. He is attacked by a territorial Welzz who lives in the lake, fatally biting and squeezing the catfish, then his mind snaps and he starts attacking anybeast during the final battle. The woodlanders set a fire at the cavern entrance and Baliss cannot escape, and he is crushed to death when the place collapses in the ensuing landslide.
