Arvicola - possibly derived from Arvicolinae, the scientific classification for the subfamily of vole species - is the large leader of a vole tribe who live by a river in the northwest. He is intelligent, has a furry face, homely voice, and helps Shogg and Triss to escape a pursing Kurda by ordering his tribe to make a path through the forest by purposely stomping and trampling a big patch of earth. After Shogg and Triss leave their pawprints on the path they hide with him in a river, and the plan works as Kurda and Riggan follow the trail his voles had left straight into a watermeadow.
