Aluco - derived from Strix aluco, the scientific name for the tawny owl - is a resident of the tunnels located underneath the Abbey Cellar (he is unaware the ancient building is above him). At one point he is captured by the Painted Ones tribe and held prisoner for five seasons, and cannot fly as Chigid purposely pulls out his pinion feathers. While living here he eats the rats and, upon discovering one of the Great Doomwyte Idol jewels, uses its eerie green light to pretend to be Baliss and scare the vermin. He is found by a group of Redwallers led by Bisky and, after helping them against the Painted Ones, moves aboveground to Redwall. He serves as guardians of the jewels but is knocked out by Tugga who attempts to steal the jewels and frame Nokko, however he recovers swiftly and sounds the alarm. The found jewel is returned to him, though he later gives all four to Glisam who then buries them so nobeast can be harmed by greed, and he stays at Redwall for the remainder of his seasons.
