Back to Redwall

Redwall is the intense and gripping series written by the very talented author Brian Jacques. These books take place in the peaceful and ancient Redwall Abbey, in Mossflower Country. The Abbey is home to woodlanders, including mice, moles, voles, a badger or two, hares, squirrels, sometimes otters, sparrows, hedgehogs, and rarely shrews (refering to GUOSIM), although they have been known to visit. The major areas within Redwall are: orchard, gatehouse, bell tower, pond, Great Hall, Cavern Hole, infirmary, cellar, kitchens, and Warbeak Loft. Vermin also play a part (rats, stoats, weasels, ferrets, foxes, snakes, and raven/crows)

The character who plays the biggest part in the series (except in Lord Brocktree where he isn't even born yet) is the one and only Martin the Warrior. We all know him as Redwall's greatest Hero and co-founder, along with Abbess Germaine. Martin is the embodiment of Redwall's spirit. His sword is famed as with himself. He was the greatest warrior in the land during his time and proved it to Badrang and Tsarmina. Martin is depicted on a woven tapestry, which is hung in Great Hall. It shows him leaning on his sword with slain and fleeing vermin behind him. This tapestry holds great powers. Martin's spirit watches over the Abbey, often appearing in dreams/visions to offer wise assistance to troubled ones, or warning the Abbey creatures of an oncoming attack. He is the one who guides them along the paths of life and watches out for their future.

These are stories of courage, hope, loyalty, friendship, and bravery. The spirit of Redwall lifts up in the books as we read how the Redwallers bravely defend their home against evil ones. As Simeon said in Mariel of Redwall, "You will never triumph against good if you are evil".
